Vilnius Old Town is a UNESCO-protected heritage site and a living urban organism, where every building tells centuries-old stories. This route covers the most important Old Town gems in 2-3 hours, from Cathedral Square to the Gates of Dawn. Wear comfortable shoes and let's go.

1st Stop: Cathedral Square

The route begins at the Vilnius Cathedral Basilica, in the heart of the city. Nearby stands the 16th-century bell tower and the Palace of the Grand Dukes, while a monument to Gediminas stands in the center of the square. Be sure to find the stone tile with the inscription „Stebuklas" (Miracle), it is said that if you stand on it and turn three times clockwise, your wishes will come true.
From the square, the Gediminas Castle Tower is clearly visible atop the hill. If you desire a panoramic view, climb the stairs (10-15 min.). From the top, one of the most beautiful views of Vilnius unfolds.
2nd Stop: Pilies Street

From Cathedral Square, turn onto Pilies Street, the most vibrant artery of the Old Town and one of Vilnius' oldest streets. It is full of souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes. Don't forget to look up, the ornate balconies and architectural details reveal the styles of different eras.
Tip: Pilies Street abounds with amber and linen souvenirs, making it the best place for authentic Lithuanian gifts.
3rd Stop: Literatų Street and St. Anne's Church

Walking along Pilies Street, you will notice the small Literatų Street on your right. It is an open-air gallery, with over two hundred small works of art embedded in the wall, honoring writers associated with Vilnius. Each plaque is unique.

The route then leads to one of the most impressive architectural wonders, St. Anne's Church. Legend has it that Napoleon wished to carry this flaming Gothic masterpiece in the palm of his hand to Paris. The filigree red brick facade is truly breathtaking.

The Vilnelė River flows nearby. After crossing the bridge, you will find yourself in the Užupis Republic, an artists' and bohemian quarter with its own constitution and angel sculpture. It's a great place to diverge from the route if you have more time.
4th Stop: Town Hall Square and Old Town Labyrinths

Return and head towards Town Hall Square. Since ancient times, it has been the city's main trading and event venue. The classical Vilnius Town Hall building stands in the center. Today, the square is surrounded by upscale restaurants and cafes, a good place for a short break.
From Town Hall Square, delve into the network of narrow streets, turn onto Stiklių, Žydų, or Gaono streets. This was once Vilnius' Jewish Quarter with a rich history. Today, you'll find cozy boutiques, artisan workshops, and stylish cafes here. These places often remain off the main tourist routes.
5th Stop: Gates of Dawn

From the Old Town streets, emerge onto Aušros Vartų Street and ascend it. You will approach the Gates of Dawn, the only surviving gate of the old city defensive wall. The chapel houses the miraculous painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary, visited by pilgrims from all over the world. Even if you are not religious, you will surely feel a special aura in this place.
