4 min read

Explore Vilnius Old Town with this self-guided walking tour, featuring 15 essential stops in Northern Europe's largest Baroque old town. Includes a map, timings, and helpful tips.

Vilnius Old Town: What Makes It So Special

Vilnius Old Town (Senamiestis) is the largest preserved Baroque old town in Northern Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Over 1,500 buildings from the 14th to 18th centuries are spread across approximately 360 hectares, enough to spend an entire day exploring the city without seeing the same street twice.

This self-guided walking tour covers 15 essential stops, takes approximately 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace, and involves about 4 km of walking.

The Route: 15 Stops

Stop 1: Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė)

Start at the Neoclassical Cathedral, the spiritual heart of Lithuania. Look for the magical tile (stebuklas) embedded in the square's pavement in front of the Cathedral: Stand on it, spin three times clockwise, and make a wish. The adjacent Bell Tower (separate entrance, 3 €) offers good views over the square.

Allow: 15-20 minutes

Stop 2: Gediminas Castle Hill

Take the funicular (2 € one-way) or climb the steps (10 min) to the top for panoramic views. The red-brown tower is the city's landmark. Open daily from 10:00-20:00 (summer), 10:00-17:00 (winter). Admission: 5 € (includes the small museum inside).

Allow: 30-45 minutes

Stop 3: Lithuanian National Museum

Located at the foot of the castle hill, this museum provides essential historical context for everything you'll see on this tour. The permanent exhibition covers Lithuanian history from the Stone Age to the present day. Admission: 5 €.

Allow: 45-60 minutes (or skip if time is short)

Stop 4: Pilies Street

The main artery of the Old Town, leading south from Cathedral Square. Lined with medieval buildings, amber shops, cafes, and street musicians. Walk slowly, look up at the facades and into the courtyards.

Allow: 15 minutes walking

Stop 5: Vilnius University Courtyard

Turn right off Pilies Street through the university portal. The 13 interconnected courtyards are one of the most beautiful (and most overlooked) places in Vilnius. The main courtyard houses an impressive sundial. Free entry during opening hours.

Allow: 15-20 minutes

Stop 6: St. John's Church

Within the university complex: a magnificent late Gothic church with a towering Baroque bell tower (the tallest in Vilnius). The interior features elaborate wooden altars. Free entry.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 7: Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė)

Vilnius' historic market square, now surrounded by restaurants and the Neoclassical Town Hall. The square hosts the Christmas market in December and various festivals in summer.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 8: St. Casimir's Church (St. Casimir's Church)

The first Baroque church in Vilnius (early 17th century) with a distinctive dome crowned by a crown. The interior is richly decorated. Free entry.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 9: Gate of Dawn (Aušros Vartai)

The only surviving gate of the original city wall, housing the Chapel of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, one of the most revered religious sites in Lithuania and Poland. The miraculous Madonna icon is said to grant wishes. Free entry; modest attire is appropriate.

Allow: 15 minutes

Stop 10: St. Teresa's Church

Adjacent to the Gate of Dawn: an early Baroque church with one of the most magnificent interiors in the Old Town. The combination of white marble, gilded altars, and ceiling frescoes is exceptional.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 11: Basilian Gate & Monastery

A Baroque arch leads to a complex where Adam Mickiewicz (Poland's greatest Romantic poet) was once imprisoned. The arch itself is one of the most photographed spots in Vilnius.

Allow: 5 minutes

Stop 12: Užupis Bridge & Bohemian Quarter

Cross the small bridge over the Vilnelė to enter Užupis, the artists' republic. Read the constitution on the mirrored plaques. Walk to the Angel statue. Browse galleries. More about Užupis →

Allow: 45-60 minutes

Stop 13: St. Anne's Church

On your way back from Užupis, stop at the impressive late Gothic church that Napoleon wanted to take to Paris. Built entirely of bricks in 33 different patterns. Best photographed in the late afternoon light.

Allow: 10 minutes

Stop 14: Bernardine Church & Garden

Next to St. Anne's Church: a late Gothic church with a beautiful garden running along the Vilnelė River. The garden is a popular spot for locals and a peaceful escape from the tourist crowds.

Allow: 15 minutes

Stop 15: St. Peter and St. Paul's Church

A short walk north of the Old Town leads to this Baroque masterpiece, featuring over 2,000 white stucco statues on every surface. One of the most extraordinary church interiors in Europe. Free entry.

Allow: 20-30 minutes
