Two-Part Comedy “Three Beloved Women” (directed by K. Kazlauskaitė)

A drama of emotions (with the weaknesses and cunning typical of people) about the eternal need to be loved.

Actress Kristina Kazlauskaitė is taking up directing once again, with a comedy from a classic of Lithuanian literature by Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė, better known by the pen name Žemaitė: “Trys mylimos” (“Three Beloved Women”).

The play is set in a Lithuanian village. Liudvikas, a farmhand, tries to win over three beloved women at once: a mother and her two daughters who live in the same village house. But his intentions are malicious: he seeks wealth, not love. The young man tries to wheedle the money the mother has saved out of her. This gives rise to a comedy of lies, deceit and seduction, as each of the three women falls seriously in love with Liudvikas.

The play’s vivid characters are brought to life by legendary theatre actors. The Mother is played by Dalia Brenciūtė and Violeta Podolskaitė. Actors of the younger generation, Balys Ivanauskas and Artūras Dubaka, share the role of Liudvikas, while the daughters are played in alternation by Redita Dominaitytė and Kristina Savickytė (Petronėlė), and Aistė Lasytė and Veronika Tarasevičiūtė (Domicelė). The farmer Kozeris is played by Vytautas Taukinaitis and Gediminas Storpirštis.

“Trys mylimos” is one of the works of national dramaturgy that remains relevant today. Three women and one man. Deception or sincerity? Love or self-interest? These are timeless questions that Kristina Kazlauskaitė, drawing on her vision as director and the actors’ talent, and using spoken dialects to convey the range of human qualities and feelings, will attempt to answer in a moving, dramatic and comic way.

We all want to love and be loved. Liudvikas and his three beloved women are a perfect example.
