The anniversary programme brings back performers who took part in the very first festival and helped shape its artistic beginnings – legendary Austrian violinist Christian Altenburger, who played in the festival's opening concert, and double bassist Josef Gilgenreiner, whose musical partnership also accompanied the festival's first steps. A special highlight of this evening's programme is Karl Goldmark's String Quintet in A minor, Op. 9, performed in Lithuania for the first time. A Hungarian composer of Jewish origin who spent most of his creative life in Vienna, Goldmark was one of the notable figures of Central European musical life in the mid-19th century. His early String Quintet opens up a rarely heard corner of the romantic repertoire, blending the Viennese musical tradition with the cultural context of Central Europe. The programme also includes Krzysztof Penderecki's “Duo Concertante” for violin and double bass – a work of unusual instrumentation bringing together the two outer voices of the string family. It will be performed by Christian Altenburger and Josef Gilgenreiner, musicians who have already presented this duo on numerous European stages. Pēteris Vasks' String Quartet No. 3 is dedicated in this concert to the composer's 80th anniversary. Opening the evening, Joseph Achron's “Hebrew Lullaby” for quintet will serve as a symbolic tribute to the festival that bears his name. ∎ Taking the stage are Christian Altenburger (violin, Austria), Dalia Dėdinskaitė (violin), Dovilė Juozapaitienė (viola), Gleb Pyšniak (cello), and Josef Gilgenreiner (double bass, Switzerland) – internationally acclaimed chamber musicians.
