Accordion Star Ksenija Sidorova
"One of the most charismatic soloists you will ever see", as Seen and Heard International wrote about Ksenija Sidorova, will perform in Lithuania this autumn. The world-renowned accordion star will appear with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, performing the Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra written especially for her this year by piano legend and composer Fazıl Say (Lithuanian premiere). The concert with the accordion virtuoso will take place on November 6 at the LVSO Concert Hall, organized by "Vilnius Festivals". Ksenija Sidorova is considered the world's leading ambassador of the classical accordion. Critics praise her for her "energy, style, poise and impeccable virtuosity" (ZealNYC), and her performances have been described as "revealing new meanings in music" (The Telegraph). In every performance, the artist convincingly combines outstanding technical mastery with profound musical expression. The celebrated Latvian virtuoso was born in Riga and began playing the accordion at the age of six, inspired by her grandmother. Ksenija Sidorova completed her studies at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London. Today the accordion soloist performs with ensembles of the highest calibre. The 2025–2026 season was an impressive one for the artist, highlighted by concerts with Paavo Järvi and the three orchestras he conducts – the Toronto Symphony, the Chicago Symphony and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Last year Sidorova also performed at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and gave recitals at the renowned Carnegie Hall in New York. Alongside her impressive solo appearances, Ksenija Sidorova is also highly regarded as a chamber music performer. Her stage partners include mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital, violinist Nicola Benedetti, baritone Benjamin Appl, the Goldmund Quartet, guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, violinist Nemanja Radulović, clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer, trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth, tenor Juan Diego Flórez and other acclaimed soloists. The accordion virtuoso has built a broad repertoire spanning more than three centuries of music – from transcriptions of works by the Baroque genius Johann Sebastian Bach to pieces by the 20th-century tango revolutionary Astor Piazzolla and works by leading composers of today. Ksenija Sidorova actively promotes contemporary music and continually expands the accordion repertoire by commissioning new works. The list of pieces written especially for her keeps growing: compositions have been dedicated to her by Tõnu Kõrvits, Artūrs Maskats, Sergey Akhunov, Dobrinka Tabakova and other composers. Her latest premiere is the Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra written especially for her by the renowned pianist and composer Fazıl Say, whose world premiere took place just a few days ago, on July 4, at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, and which the Vilnius audience will hear this very autumn. Fazıl Say, well known to Lithuanian music lovers, turns in this work to an instrument that has long been regarded as peripheral in the classical concert tradition, yet at the same time embodies remarkable cultural diversity. In this Concerto, the accordion becomes a bridge between folk music, tango, klezmer music and contemporary compositional traditions, opening up a complex, multi-layered sound world.
