IRISH BAGPIPE SYMPHONY: Mark Redmond, Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra | VILNIUS WINDS
This concert is organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Ireland to mark Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. The core of the program is a dialogue between two cultures, bringing together the Irish uilleann pipes and the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra to embody the ideas of unity and European partnership. In the first part, M. K. Čiurlionis’ symphonic poem “In the Forest” (Miške) and works by the American classic Aaron Copland bridge the gap between national identity and universal values. The concert culminates in a special premiere of a work by Shaun Davey, where uilleann pipes virtuoso Mark Redmond joins Lithuanian performers to masterfully blend tradition and modernity. Shaun Davey is one of Ireland’s most prominent contemporary composers, whose work merges Irish folk music with classical orchestral traditions. His monumental works are often dedicated to Irish history and culture, and his most famous pieces, such as “The Brendan Voyage”, have popularized the uilleann pipes in a symphonic context worldwide. Davey is a recipient of the prestigious Ivor Novello Award, has earned two BAFTA nominations, and a Tony nomination for his Broadway musical scores. Mark Redmond is a master of the Irish uilleann pipes, acclaimed in both traditional and classical music scenes. He has performed with prestigious ensembles such as the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and was a featured soloist in the world-famous show “Riverdance”. Redmond has performed at major Irish state occasions, including the visit of Pope Francis and the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland. He currently teaches traditional music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
