Aske Thiberg performance "Buvimo vieta"

On Thursday, September 3, at 6 PM and 7:30 PM, the performance "Buvimo vieta" by Copenhagen-based Swedish artist Aske Thiberg will take place at the Contemporary Art Centre (ŠMC). "Buvimo vieta" is a 25-minute solo performance. Surrounded by the audience, the performer executes precise, tension-filled movements with almost no facial expression, accompanied by minimalist, cyclically repeating digital melodies, interspersed with sounds from public online audio libraries. Rhythmic sounds generated by the body – claps, stomps, and occasional whistles – merge with a concise synthesizer theme, creating a melancholic, pop-music-like sound cycle that fills the performance space. The choreography of the piece is based on locking – a street dance style that emerged in the 1970s alongside funk music, characterized by sudden stops and so-called 'locks'. Thiberg employs locking's characteristic mechanical movement vocabulary – claps, frozen poses, and abrupt transitions – to create choreography that balances between humanity and automatism. Each gesture, prompted by a recurring sound, raises the question: is the performer moving to the music, or is the music controlling their body? As he moves, short texts are read in a monotonous voice – absurd stories about everyday relationships that gradually become stranger and stranger. The movement and narrative resemble digital animation: it seems as if they are taking place in a space where gravity does not apply, logic is distorted, and violence becomes playful. On the day of the event, the performance will be shown twice . First performance – 6 PM. Second performance – 7:30 PM. Performance duration – 25 min.
