Aske Thiberg Performance „Place of Being“
On Thursday, 3 September, at 6 PM and 7:30 PM, the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) will host a performance titled „Place of Being“ by Copenhagen-based Swedish artist Aske Thiberg. „Place of Being“ is a 25-minute solo performance. Surrounded by the audience, the performer executes precise, tension-filled movements with almost no facial expression, accompanied by minimalist, cyclically repeating digital melodies interspersed with sounds from public online audio libraries. Rhythmic sounds produced by the body – clapping, stomping, occasional whistling – blend with a concise synthesizer theme to create a melancholic, pop-like sound cycle that fills the performance space. The choreography is based on locking – a street dance style that emerged alongside funk music in the 1970s, characterized by sudden stops and so-called "locks." Thiberg draws on locking's mechanical vocabulary of movement – claps, frozen poses, and abrupt transitions – to create a choreography that balances between the human and the automatic. Each gesture, prompted by a repeating sound, raises the question: is the performer moving to the music, or is the music controlling his body? As he moves, short texts are read in a monotone voice – absurd stories about everyday relationships that gradually become stranger and stranger. The movement and narrative resemble digital animation: they seem to take place in a space where gravity does not apply, logic becomes distorted, and violence turns playful. On the day of the event, the performance will be shown twice. First show – 6 PM. Second show – 7:30 PM. Duration of the performance – 25 min.
