Between Dragons and Basilisks: Indrė Urbelytė and Laurynas Peluritis Discuss Stories for Children

Why do we often encounter unicorns and mermaids, dragons and basilisks in children's literature? Is magic essential when telling sensitive and complex stories about human life? Can creatures of a demonic nature help us talk about goodness, beauty, and truth? These questions will be discussed by exhibition curator and author of the publication "Knygų slibinas. Fantastinis pasakojimas apie knygų grožį" Indrė Urbelytė , and philosopher, Vilnius University associate professor, and author of the book "Profesorius S. ir Vilniaus Baziliskas" Laurynas Peluritis . The author of the book about the Basilisk was inspired by the French series of publications about philosophers, "Mažieji Platonai". In the Lithuanian narrative, the ideas of the renowned Lithuanian thinker Vosylius Sezeman about the nature of goodness and beauty unfold in Vilnius, ravaged by World War II. In the darkest moments of human life, the characters do not lose hope and remain attentive to the pain of others. When disaster strikes, Sezeman must extinguish the flames that have engulfed the Vilnius University Library. No one can deny that the family of the Basilisk's cousin, Fiery Dragon (Ugnius Slibinas), who established a profitable book-burning business, was involved in this mischief. Did they truly act wrongly by turning valuable publications into firewood? After all, at the beginning of time, dragons, driven underground by humans, never learned to read and never knew what those books were. The discussion will take place on September 3rd from 6 PM at the exhibition dedicated to the history and art of books, "Knygų slibinas. Fantastinis pasakojimas apie knygų grožį". The exhibition is open at the house-museum of the renowned bibliophile, artist, and collector Kazys Varnelis until September 27th. The event is free of charge.
