Česlovas Lukenskas Exhibition "PO-PO": A Visual Territory After the Collapse of Humanity

On September 3, the Česlovas Lukenskas exhibition "PO-PO" will open at Vilnius Town Hall, featuring a "PO-PO" performance during the opening. The core of the exhibition by one of Lithuania's most prominent interdisciplinary artists is a dialogue between fragility and destruction. The artist's latest works – "cremations" (burnings), collages, assemblages, objects, and "motographic" drawings – explore the state "after": after an event, after a word, after a structure. "This is a visual territory after the collapse of humanity," Č. Lukenskas describes the exhibition's idea. According to the artist, the exhibition is "not about beauty, but about truth," and the textures of charred remains and collected objects resemble archaeological finds from a yet-unnamed civilization. The exhibition consists of five parts. "Algiukas' Heart, Which Was Home" speaks of the struggle for life and becomes a symbol of hope. "Little Skulls" reflect the tragedy of children dying in wars and human cruelty. "Stained Glass of Hell" is associated with February 24, 2022, and human fears and internal struggles. "Carpets of Consciousness," created from analog film strips, speak of informational catastrophe, propaganda, and the struggle for human attention. "Cremated Figurines" transform burnt oak figures into symbols of memory and new life. Česlovas Lukenskas (born 1959) is one of the pioneers of contemporary interdisciplinary art in Lithuania and the founder of the avant-garde art group "Post Ars". His works have been exhibited in Lithuania and abroad. The opening of the "PO-PO" exhibition is on September 3 at 6 PM at Vilnius Town Hall. A performance will take place during the opening.
