Cinema Classics Evenings: “The Seventh Seal” (1957)
In May at Cinema Classics Evenings – a film on themes of faith and the finitude of life. This is Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal” (1957), one of the most celebrated examples of existentialism in cinema and a turning point in the director’s career. Knight Antonius Block returns to his native Sweden after a decade of crusading. He is met by famine, plague, and the sight of witches burning at the stake, and before him appears the white-faced Death, demanding the warrior’s life. Block introduces himself as a prisoner of his own hopes and, hoping to win eternity, challenges Death to a game of chess. Death agrees. What follows is one of the most powerful conversations in cinematic history about the transience of human existence and the nature of faith.
