CIPOLLINO || Interactive Mask Performance for Children

Director Šarūnas Datenis, together with artist Antanas Dubra and composer Vytautas Leistrumas, as a creative team, present their fourth play for children. The plays by these artists, "Pinocchio," "There's no Wi-Fi in the Village," and "It Was Here / It's Not Here," have garnered much audience appreciation and were recognized by theatre professionals. Now, this creative group has decided to offer a modern interpretation of Gianni Rodari's work "The Adventures of Cipollino." Gianni Rodari (1920 – 1980) was an Italian journalist and writer, editor of several children's newspapers, best known for his literary fairy tales, especially "The Adventures of Cipollino," written in 1951. In his fairy tales, the author spoke not only about eternal values but also, using the aesthetics of nonsense and humor, boldly criticized political and social events: likely for this reason, he is still enjoyed by not only children but also adults. In 1970, the author received the highest international award for children's writers – the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. This time, young audiences can expect an adventure-filled story of liberation and the fight for justice, which doesn't fit onto a single theatre stage but extends across different theatrical spaces. Together with Cipollino the little onion and other vegetables, children will search for a path to a free, unconstrained life, openly and critically looking at our own history and future prospects. As director Šarūnas Datenis states: "With this play, we want to encourage children to think for themselves and to rebel a little. To understand that we live in a democratic state and do not have to blindly follow what we are told. We have the right to ask questions, share our ideas, and object to government decisions."
