CHIPOLINO || N-18 || Interactive Mask Performance Adapted for Adults

Director Šarūnas Datenis, together with artist Antanas Dubra and composer Vytautas Leistrumas, as a creative team, present their fourth play for children. The artists' previous plays, „Pinocchio“, „No Wi-Fi in the Village“, and „Here Was / Here Is Not“, have garnered much audience appreciation and critical acclaim from theatre professionals. Now, this creative group has decided to offer a contemporary interpretation of Gianni Rodari's work, „The Adventures of Cipollino“. Gianni Rodari (1920 – 1980) was an Italian journalist and writer, editor of several children's newspapers, best known for his literary fairy tales, especially „The Adventures of Cipollino“, written in 1951. In his stories, the author not only spoke about eternal values but also, using the aesthetics of nonsense and humor, boldly criticized political and social events. This is likely why he is still enjoyed by both children and adults. In 1970, the author received the highest international award for children's writers – the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. This time, young viewers can expect an adventurous story of liberation and the fight for justice, which could not be contained within a single theatre stage and spans different theatrical spaces. Together with Cipollino the little onion and other vegetables, children will search for a path to a free, unconstrained life, openly and critically examining our own history and future prospects. As director Šarūnas Datenis states: „With this performance, we want to encourage children to think for themselves and to rebel a little. To understand that we live in a democratic state and do not have to blindly follow what we are told. We have the right to ask questions, share our ideas, and object to government decisions.“
