Classic Cinema Evenings: "My Own Private Idaho" (1991)

This June, Classic Cinema Evenings presents one of the first widely acclaimed works that sensitively and complexly portrayed queer identity and the lives of marginalized youth. River Phoenix's exceptional role is still considered one of the strongest performances among actors of his generation. Gus Van Sant's film continues to influence auteur cinema, where the road movie genre is used as a form of identity exploration and social critique. My Own Private Idaho is a road drama about two young street hustlers living on the fringes of society. Mike, a young man suffering from narcolepsy, embarks on a journey across the United States, hoping to find his mother, a home, and answers about his past. He is accompanied by Scott, a rebellious son from a wealthy family who has chosen life on the streets as a form of protest. Freely interpreting William Shakespeare's texts, the director creates a dreamlike, fragile, yet bold narrative about friendship, desire, and the search for identity.
