Classic Cinema Evenings: "The Seventh Seal" (1957)
In May, Classic Cinema Evenings present a film exploring themes of faith and the finiteness of life. This is Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" (1957), one of the most famous examples of existentialism in cinema, and a turning point in the director's career. Knight Antonius Block returns to his native Sweden after a decade of crusades. He is met by famine, plague, and the sight of witches burning at the stake, while pale-faced Death appears before him, demanding the warrior's life. Block introduces himself as a prisoner of his own hopes and, hoping to win eternity, offers to play a game of chess. Death agrees. Thus begins one of the most powerful conversations in cinema history about the transience of human existence and faith.
