Conference „Russian Drama Theatres in the Baltic Region: History, Cultural Memory and Institutional Transformations“

On September 24, 2026, a scholarly conference and discussion dedicated to the history of Russian drama theatre in Lithuania and in the wider context of the Baltic region will take place in the Small Hall of the Old Vilnius Theatre. History, context and cultural memory are the conference's main themes. Discussion will cover not only the historical and political circumstances behind the emergence of Russian drama theatre, but also its artistic life: significant performances, notable creators, repertoire, artistic turning points, and the theatre's place in the culture of Vilnius and the Baltic region across different periods. The conference takes as its chronological starting points two dates: 1946, when the first professional performance of the Vilnius Russian Drama Theatre took place in Lithuania, and 1986, when the theatre moved into its current building of the Old Vilnius Theatre on J. Basanavičiaus Street. Admission is free. Language – Lithuanian/English. Registration is required here.
