In 2010, David Almond was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award, often referred to as the Nobel Prize for children's literature, for his books for children and young adults written in the style of magical realism. "I always knew I wanted to be a writer, writing stories and binding them into little books. I often visited the local library and dreamed of books with my name on the cover. I also wanted to play for Newcastle United football team (I'm still waiting for the call)," says David Almond. "My Dad's a Birdman" is an inspiring story about faith, love, and the ability to make life more beautiful through imagination. At the same time, it is a sensitive story about a lonely but very independent girl growing up without a mother, and a sad, dreaming father who is unable to take care of himself. Lizzie lives in her own boundless and complex inner world. She thinks a lot, feels deeply, and knows how to take care of her eccentric father. And there is certainly plenty to worry about – her father suddenly decides to become a bird and enter the Great Human Bird Competition. The birdman dad wants his daughter to be proud of him, and together they will have to embark on a long journey to grow up, accept each other, and discover the miracles hidden in everyday life. Hope and love can give wings to anyone, even the strict Auntie Doreen. Photography and filming may take place during the performance. Photos and videos are used for theatre communication purposes.
