Discussion "Eglė and Žilvinas on the Ballet Stage"

One of the most famous Lithuanian fairy tales about Eglė, Žilvinas, and their children turned into trees, appeared on the theatre stage as early as the beginning of the 20th century, and became firmly established in the history of Lithuanian ballet in the 1960s, when composer Eduardas Balsys wrote the ballet "Eglė žalčių karalienė". This sole ballet by Balsys is special because it is the most frequently staged work – already in 1960, it was staged by Vytautas Grivickas at the Lithuanian State Academic (now National) Opera and Ballet Theatre (in 1965, the premiere of a wide-format color film created by Grivickas also took place), Elegijus Bukaitis created it in the new theatre building in 1976, Egidijus Domeika in 1995, English choreographer George Williamson in 2015, and Martynas Rimeikis at the Klaipėda State Musical Theatre in 2019. Performances with different choreographic styles have enriched Lithuanian ballet art, providing an opportunity for various set designers and costume artists – Juozas Jankus, Rimtautas Gibavičius, Dalia Mataitienė, Marijus Jacovskis, Elvita Brazdylytė – to interpret this story of love and betrayal in their own way. The discussion will cover the theme of Eglė and Žilvinas's love in Lithuanian culture, Eduardas Balsys's music and its proposed choreographic forms and directorial solutions, the significance of music in creating ballet characters, their relationships, and their connection with the ballet audience. The discussion will feature ballet critic and historian Žilvinas Dautartas, soloists Loreta Bartusevičiūtė and Julija Stankevičiūtė, who performed the role of Eglė in different productions, and choreographer Martynas Rimeikis. The discussion is organized on the occasion of the exhibition "Šokimai, rodymai, nudavimai…" Lithuanian Ballet – 100" – one of the exhibition halls is dedicated to various productions of "Eglė žalčių karalienė". The discussion will be moderated by the exhibition curator, art critic Helmutas Šabasevičius. The discussion will take place on August 27 at 6 PM at the Muzeoteka of the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum. The event is free. Latecomers arriving more than 15 minutes after the start will not be admitted.
