Duck, Death and the Tulip || A Puppet Show for Children

Death is always nearby, just in case. But it's not death that brings misfortune; it's life... Incidentally, life also brings good things – friendship, conversations, games, and the warmth that accompanies them. It's a bit strange, but by getting to know death, we also get to know life, and vice versa. Therefore, talking about such things is a much better solution than hiding or running away to who knows where. The puppet show „Duck, Death and the Tulip“ attempts to reveal the importance of such conversations and introduce children to the end of life as a natural cycle of nature, a necessary counterbalance to life. The author of the book „Duck, Death and the Tulip“, published in 2007, the renowned German writer and artist Wolf Erlbruch, was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2006 and received the most important international children's literature award – the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award – in 2016. „Duck, Death and the Tulip“ has been translated into more than 20 languages, and in 2018, thanks to translator Rūta Jonynaitė, it became available to Lithuanian readers. Jūratė Trimakaitė, a puppeteer creating in France and Lithuania, is already known to „Lėlė“ audiences from the play „Kryptis“ (Direction), staged in 2017 for adults and youth in the Grand Hall and nominated for the Golden Stage Cross award. Incidentally, the new play is also being created by the same team assembled by the director for „Kryptis“: set designer – Cerice Guyon (France), composer – Thomas Demay (France), „Lėlė“ actors – Sigita Mikalauskaitė, Lijana Muštašvili, Asta Stankūnaitė, Deivis Sarapinas. Actresses Erika Gaidauskaitė and Elvyra Piškinaitė, and lighting designer Felix Battailon (France) have also joined them. According to the play's director, puppeteer Jūratė Trimakaitė: „When we talk about death, we usually talk about life, its value. So, when staging this play, I wanted to show death as a natural process of nature, a cyclicality, a change necessary for life. After all, if we didn't complicate everything ourselves, we would experience certain things much more easily, we would have far fewer phobias... And what I like most about Erlbruch's book is that it doesn't give any answers, because in reality, when discussing this topic, we can only ponder, discuss.“
