They found just the spot on the outskirts of the city's Orthodox quarter—a swampy, overgrown area near the road to Polotsk. Over time, a church and monastery rose here, gardens bloomed, vegetable patches filled the air with the scent of herbs, and bathhouses were established along the Vilnia River.
