Tour "Surrounded by Spirits"

How does today's modern worldview, influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment, fundamentally differ from the old one, prevalent in pre-modern times? Back then, it was believed that the entire human environment was full of spirits: in the trees growing nearby, in streams, the souls of the dead repenting in the hearth, guardian house spirits living in various parts of the home, and Death or Illness constantly lurking nearby. To live happily, one had to communicate with otherworldly beings – some to honor and appease, others to care for, and from a third group to distance oneself with protective signs. During this tour, we will explore how this worldview influenced human life in Lithuania until the early 20th century. We will discuss the methods used to gain the favor of otherworldly beings and ensure success in human endeavors, practices designed to protect against constantly lurking supernatural dangers, and mystical healing methods. Finally, we will consider whether spirits were also invoked in matters of love.
