Curator-led Tour of the Exhibition 'On the Wave of Paris Exhibitions: Ethnography, Cultural Diplomacy, and Identity'

During the tour with the exhibition curator, Dr. Migle Lebednykaite , the exhibition will unfold for visitors as a narrative about Lithuania's aspiration to be visible in the world through culture. You will learn how Paris became an important stage for Lithuania's voice, and how participation in world exhibitions transformed into not only a cultural but also a political act – a way to present the nation's identity to an international audience. The appearance in 1900, while still part of the Russian Empire, was a bold declaration of the nation's vitality and existence. In later exhibitions – in 1935 and 1937 – Lithuania already spoke as an independent state. Participation alongside other Baltic countries marked a common regional identity, and folk art gained new meaning, transforming from a symbol of survival into an expression of mature culture and aesthetics. During the tour, we will also explore the works of contemporary artists exhibited, which connect history and the present, creating symbolic bridges between different periods and forms of identity. This is an invitation to rethink how culture has acted and continues to act as an important means of Lithuania's representation in the world. Duration: 1 hour.
