Guided Tour with the Exhibition Curator: 'Caravaggio and the Caravaggisti at Valdovų rūmai'

For the first time in the history of Lithuanian museology, this exhibition presents 'Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy', a masterpiece by the Baroque genius Caravaggio (born Michelangelo Merisi, 1571–1610). While it is not known for certain whether any of the artist's original works were ever part of historical Lithuanian art collections, the works of his followers—distinguished by their interplay of light and heightened realism—undoubtedly adorned and continue to adorn Lithuanian manors, churches, museums, and private collections. The permanent exhibitions of the Valdovų rūmai museum also feature several works by Caravaggio's followers, testifying to the impact and vitality of the tradition he initiated. Even the artist's rivals could not resist the uniqueness of his work. Thus, the display of Caravaggio's 'Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy' at Valdovų rūmai gains an exceptionally rich context, allowing visitors to see the genius creator's influence on the development of European art and to discover the works of the so-called Caravaggisti. During the guided tour with the exhibition curator, you will discover more than just the artist's work. You will also hear stories about the artist's equally fascinating personality and his dramatic life. Duration: 1 hour. Price: €10. The tour is conducted in Lithuanian for groups of up to 20 people. Tickets are non-refundable.
