Eternal Resonance | Indian Classical Music
We invite you to begin the summer by rising above the everyday and immersing yourself in the world of dhrupad – one of the oldest Indian classical music traditions – that transcends the boundaries of time. In the first part of the concert you will hear a duet by vocalist Simona Chalikovė (Portugal / Lithuania) and pakhawaj percussion master Federico Sanesi (Italy), accompanied by the sound of the tanpura. The second part will feature Adomas Šimkūnas on bansuri flute, accompanied by Federico Sanesi on pakhawaj percussion. Dhrupad is one of the oldest Indian musical traditions, regarded as the foundation of the entire system of Indian classical music. It is music that breathes with majestic serenity, concentration and inner light. It is a refined musical form that invites the listener into a sensitive, contemplative presence – with sound, with the moment, with oneself. The roots of dhrupad reach back to the ancient Vedic chanting tradition – the Sama Veda – in which sound was perceived as a sacred and transformative power. Originally nurtured in temple spaces as music for meditation, dhrupad later moved to royal courts, where it became a solemn and refined classical art form. Despite this journey through different spaces, dhrupad has preserved its essence – a deep connection with silence, inner peace and meditative sound unfolding. In the concert you will hear melodic classical ragas, beginning in meditative calm and gradually transforming into a playful, dynamic interplay of rhythm and melody. Adomas Šimkūnas (bansuri flute) – performs North Indian classical music ragas in the “Dhrupad” style. Since 2011 he has been studying the art of bansuri flute playing with master Jean-Christophe Bonnafous (France / India). He has participated many times in masterclasses with the world legend of bansuri flute – Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (India). Since 2016 he has been interested in the oldest North Indian classical music vocal genre “Dhrupad” and began studies in the vocal and bansuri flute aspects of this genre, which he continues to this day, following the Guru–shishya oral tradition with professor and world-renowned “Dhrupad” vocal master and composer Dr. Pandit Ritwik Sanyal. Simona Chalikovė (Apsara): a vocalist of Lithuanian descent, international performer and custodian of the Dhrupad “Dagarvani” tradition, living between Portugal and India. Having received a Western music and jazz singing education in Lithuania, she has devoted more than a decade to systematic studies of Indian classical music and Dhrupad singing in India and Italy. She studied the Dhrupad tradition with one of the most prominent masters of this music – professor, philosopher and performer Pandit Ritwik Sanyal in Varanasi, with whom she continues her studies, as well as with renowned Dhrupad performer Amelia Cuni. Simona completed her Dhrupad vocal studies with the highest distinction at the “Arrigo Pedrollo” Conservatory in Vicenza, Italy. Since 2018 she has taught Indian classical music singing at the Vicenza Conservatory and other music institutions, leads masterclasses and performs in Europe and India, presenting the Dhrupad singing tradition to an international audience. Having completed Indology studies, she also teaches Sanskrit and introduces others to the Vedic tradition and Indian philosophy. Federico Sanesi (percussion) – an eclectic and multifaceted musician who is able to combine different traditions, various musical and theatrical languages into a harmonious whole. Improvising consciously, Federico creates a narrative of poetry and vivid rhythm in his performance. Federico’s distinctive style is reflected in all his performances with prominent Indian music musicians – Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Sujaat Khan, Pradeep Kumar Barot, Ustad Shahed Parwez, Ritwik Sanyal, Vidur Mallik, Stephen James and many others. He also collaborates with leading jazz musicians from Italy and other countries. In 2012 Federico received the prestigious Global Indian Music award
