Exploring the Potential of Sound Aesthetics: A Workshop with softchaos
On Thursday, June 18, at 6:00 PM, the House of Composers will host a workshop with softchaos. The workshop will complement the introductory event of the 16th Baltic Triennial, "Pulling an Arrow from the Heart", taking place the following day, and will serve as a preview of the triennial's educational program next year. To explore the history of cities like the Bronx, Kingston, or Detroit, and to delve into the work of creators like K-Hand, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, as well as collectives like Underground Resistance and Drexciya, is to explore today's global dancefloor culture. Although DJ culture has over time become intertwined with the mechanisms of the music industry, it still harbors many alternative histories that challenge dominant narratives and hold the power to build world-making spaces. The workshop will discuss the social, aesthetic, and technological connections between DJ practice and what Arthur Jafa calls the desire to create "a cinema with the power, beauty, and alienation of Black music." Participants will be invited to reflect on the legacy, history, and deeper threads of art as protest within this practice. The workshop will also offer an opportunity to learn the basics of DJing. This workshop is an introduction to the idea that music is not just sound, but a practice. Musicians, writers, artists, and all curious observers are welcome to participate. If you are interested in the DJing and music mixing part of the workshop, please bring with you : A USB flash drive (larger than 128 GB) with at least 10 music tracks in MP3 format. You can also bring spoken word poetry or noise samples in MP3 format. This can be electronic music, music with lyrics, or any other sounds. The better you know your chosen tracks or sounds, the better. Come with some thoughts on why this music is important to you or why you like it. It is also advisable to bring a notebook, a pen, and, if possible, a laptop. Bring everything you might need to comfortably spend the 3-hour workshop. The event will be held in English and is free of charge , but the number of participants is limited to 10 people. If you wish to participate, please fill out the registration form here.
