Four-legged Residents of the Manor | Kultūros naktis

Markučiai Manor invites you to an interactive story about the historical relationship between humans and animals. How were animals cared for in the 19th century? How did animal shelters of that time operate and what role did they play in society? An interesting and sensitive relationship with animals is also reflected in Markučiai Manor – in photographs of the owners with their beloved pets and in gravestones for dogs erected next to the family cemetery. You will learn how animals were buried back then, what traditions accompanied their farewells, and what they reveal about people's connection with their pets. This lecture-excursion invites visitors, along with their four-legged companions, to explore the history of animal welfare in 19th-century Vilnius and Markučiai Manor. The excursion will conclude with a dog trainer's talk and practical tips on dog behavior – what they fear, what they want, and how to better understand your four-legged friend. The event will take place at Markučiai Manor (Subačiaus St. 124) on June 12, at 8 PM. Registration is not required. The visual uses a photograph from the Markučiai Manor Collection of the Vilnius City Museum. The photograph shows M. Nazimova with a dog near Markučiai Manor, first half of the 20th century, photographer unknown.
