The performers' costumes and set details, which change color and shape throughout the show, encourage babies to move and experience the joy of discovery. For adults, it's a rare opportunity to see their little ones in a completely different – artistic, out-of-the-ordinary – setting that awakens children's imagination and nurtures creativity. The performance has no words, so movement becomes a universal language. Do you think babies don't need theatre because they don't understand anything? B. Banevičiūtė invites us to take a closer look at the perceptive and expressive abilities of little ones, to let go of stereotypical assumptions, and encourages a change in how we view the youngest members of society. B. Banevičiūtė builds the performance's dramaturgy around the shared action of the actors and the child-spectators, and the concept draws on the image of the World Tree found in the mythology of many nations, whose roots represent the past and the underworld, whose trunk represents the present and earthly existence, and whose branches represent the future and the sky. In Lithuanian mythology, snakes live at the base of the tree, people and bees near the trunk, and birds in the branches. On stage, the actors creatively transform abstract objects of various shapes and textures into mythological attributes of the World Tree, leaving room for the little ones to interpret the ideas on offer in their own way. „There's no single correct answer for what babies should understand or how they should react during the performance – all their reactions are appropriate and welcome, so mothers and fathers can relax and not worry if their child does something different from those around them,“ suggests the choreographer. According to B. Banevičiūtė, this is what makes art special: it lets viewers think, feel and enjoy it in their own way. A friendly performance – suitable for children with heightened sensory sensitivity and disabilities. Wordless – suitable for speakers of other languages. Please remember – shoes must be removed before entering the performance space. /// Birutė Banevičiūtė is a choreographer, director and educator who began her creative career in 1993 as artistic director of the dance theatre „Dansema.“ Since 2007 she has been creating performances for children and is known as the first person in Lithuania to create a dance performance for babies („Mosaic“).
