Jean-Luc Lagarce "I WAS AT HOME AND WAITED FOR THE RAIN TO COME" (Dir. Kotryna Siaurusaityte)

Jean-Luc Lagarce's play "I Was at Home and Waited for the Rain to Come" ("J'etais dans ma maison et j'attendais que la pluie vienne") is the penultimate work by the French actor, director and playwright. Written in 1994, a year before the author's death (he died of AIDS at just 38), it is one of three testamentary works (alongside "It Is Only the End of the World", 1990, and "Far Away", 1995). "I Was at Home and Waited for the Rain to Come" tells of five women (sisters, a mother, a grandmother) who have waited many years for a brother, son, grandson to return. Their lives have been suspended, frozen in time. Now he has come back and lies in the bed they kept for him. Is he sleeping? Dying? We never see him: is he truly there, or merely a projection of the women's hopes, fears, grievances and expectations? "I found it beautiful that the play seems unfinished, that it has more pauses than action. This opens space for interpretation and stirs the desire to reflect on the nature of love, sacrifice and truth. My choice of this work was entirely intuitive, yet it feels relevant both to me personally and to the person of the 21st century. The intertwined tragedy, depth and gentle humour act on one emotionally and open up the vast and complex theme of waiting." After graduating she worked for several years at the Juozas Miltinis Drama Theatre in Panevezys, where she directed four productions. She is currently working as an assistant director at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre (LNDT). The performance is in Russian with Lithuanian subtitles
