Black and White

"Black and White" is a play created using the unique "Atviro rato" method, continuing the tradition of biographical improvisations "Atviras ratas" and "Lietaus žemė," which have become the theatre's calling cards. This play presents the biographical stories of a generation born and raised during the Soviet era, who experienced the Sąjūdis period, encoding the choices and experiences of people who lived through a pivotal historical turning point. Life during the Soviet occupation period shaped people with vastly different biographies and worldviews: some grew up with fear and learned to adapt, while others, on the contrary, were driven by a desire to resist the system and a belief that the seemingly indestructible regime would eventually come to an end. Sąjūdis and the subsequent Independence became for this generation a period not only of political changes but also of individual choices for everyone. Passive observers, fighters willing to risk their own and their loved ones' safety, skeptics – all of them, guided by their convictions, found their place in history. "Black and White" casts an open and personal look at these experiences, and thirty years later, with pivotal historical turning points once again emerging within arm's reach, the play's creative team aims to discuss how the choices of different people have shaped and continue to shape the society we live in.
