Laimis Vilkončius's Oratorio "NEMO NISI MORS"

In 2026, Lithuania will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Catherine Jagiellon. This personality and her historical role have been increasingly discussed recently. She was the youngest daughter of Sigismund the Old and Bona Sforza, sister of Sigismund Augustus, Duchess of Finland, Queen of Sweden – her son Sigismund Vasa started the Vasa dynasty of rulers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The life story of Catherine, also known as the “Queen of Rose and Stone,” and the theme of personal sacrifice and duty become the central narrative axis of the oratorio, symbolically expressed in the work's title “Nemo Nisi Mors” (Lithuanian for “nothing but death”) – such an inscription is found on Catherine Jagiellon's tombstone in Uppsala (Sweden). Her story continues to inspire courage to be oneself, to discover inner strength, and to calmly, trusting one's intuition, embrace changes that lead to discoveries. The oratorio is an approximately hour-long work for baritone, choir, and symphony wind orchestra. The libretto author is Rimvydas Stankevičius, laureate of the National Culture and Art Prize. The work is performed by the Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra and Kaunas State Choir, with Modestas Sedlevičius singing the solo part, and Karolis Variakojis conducting.
