Lietaus žemė

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." (George Santayana) “Lietaus žemė” – biographical improvisations, spoken through the voices and bodies of actors seated in a circle, addressing the events of the first half of the 20th century that left the biggest mark on Lithuanian history. The interconnected stories of people who lived during the interwar and post-war periods, experienced by the creators' own grandparents, relatives, or complete strangers, reveal the difficult choices and daily struggle to remain human for ordinary Lithuanian residents caught in a ruthless political situation. “Lietaus žemė” does not delve into accusations or politicized polemics – the play touches upon Lithuania's past through fragmented snippets of life stories, woven into a gentle, subtly patriotic and delicate whole. The stories of real people who once lived, recreated and interpreted by the actors on stage, emerge from small details, sounds, glances, or even authentic objects, allowing the audience to feel even closer to a living and breathing past. Human joys and difficulties, happy and unhappy love stories, interpersonal connections and experiences – elements of every person's and nation's existence, indelible even in the face of the greatest repressions and political changes – in “Lietaus žemė” merge into a sensitive and personal lesson of non-textbook history. Premiere – November 30, 2011 The performance is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. On December 1, 2026 , the performance LIETAUS ŽEMĖ will be shown for the very last time . In 2012, at the festival "Lietuvos teatrų pavasaris’12", "Lietaus žemė" was voted the best performance on the small stage by the audience. In 2012, the performance was nominated for the "Auksinio scenos kryžiaus" award for best national dramaturgy.
