LNSO Concert – Violin Star ILYA GRINGOLTS, Trio "FortVio", Conductor Modestas Pitrėnas

Violin star ILYA GRINGOLTS performs in Vilnius "This concert was without equal – it was an unforgettable experience created by a musician dedicated and inspired to the very marrow." So wrote the publication "Pizzicato" about one of Ilya Gringolts's concerts. This autumn, Ilya Gringolts (Switzerland) – a performer who captivates audiences worldwide with exceptional virtuosity and expressive interpretations – will appear in Vilnius. On 16 October at the National Philharmonic, the internationally acclaimed violinist will perform with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro Modestas Pitrėnas. In the first half of this concert, the trio "FortVio" – celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – will also perform with the orchestra: Ingrida Rupaitė (violin), Povilas Jacunskas (cello), Indrė Baikštytė (piano), who will give the world premiere of a new work by Kristupas Bubnelys. Gringolts performs with the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Rome's Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Milan's Filarmonica della Scala, BBC Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, NHK Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Zurich Tonhalle, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, São Paulo Symphony, Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and others. Highlights of last season include performances with the Luxembourg Philharmonic, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony and Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra. "It is hard to imagine more expressive and uncompromising violin playing" – so wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung about this violin virtuoso. The violinist studied at the renowned Juilliard School in New York, where his teacher was the legendary Itzhak Perlman – one of the most celebrated violinists of our era. In 1998, Gringolts won the prestigious International Paganini Violin Competition and remains to this day the youngest winner in the competition's history. He currently plays on a Guarneri "del Gesù" violin (1743). The violinist captivates world audiences with a combination of virtuosity and extraordinary interpretations, and is constantly in search of new musical challenges. His artistry is admired by numerous music critics, with "Pizzicato" adding: "Ilya Gringolts's interpretations testify to his deep engagement with and understanding of the works, as well as his unshakeable, assured command of the instrument". Gringolts's repertoire encompasses both the great masterworks of the violin canon and rarely performed pieces as well as contemporary works. Composers who have written works specially for him include Peter Maxwell Davies, Salvatore Sciarrino, Bernhard Lang, Michael Jarrell, Beat Furrer, Christophe Bertrand, Chaya Czernowin, Augusta Read Thomas, Mirela Ivičević and others. The violinist also regularly performs music by John Adams, Jörg Widmann, Heinz Holliger, Valentin Silvestrov, Sofia Gubaidulina, Mieczysław Weinberg and other leading 20th–21st century composers. Chamber music occupies an important place in the performer's activities. Since 2008 the violinist has been first violin of the Gringolts Quartet, with which he has appeared to great acclaim at the Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and Venice's La Fenice. Gringolts regularly collaborates with top-calibre musicians such as cellists Nicolas Altstaedt and Christian Poltéra, violist Lawrence Power, and pianists Alexander Lonquich and Peter Laul. His extensive discography, released on major classical music labels Deutsche Grammophon, BIS, Hyperion and Outhere Music, includes highly praised recordings of all 24 Paganini Caprices (2013), all of Stravinsky's works for violin (2018), and one of his most recent recordings – J. S. Bach Sonatas for violin and harpsichord recorded with Francesco Corti – which received the Diapason d'Or, Amadeus d'Or and other prestigious awards. https://youtu.be/Q_BId5xAEoc?si=mx55EnNplQA0qD5W https://youtu.be/d5H2cZ3GMWY?si=JCajfV7TZXEhQIp7 https://youtu.be/5K3jh2qCdnY?si=J8UsktWw5Ikyu6rf https://youtu.be/F51UDyw7SFU?si=sJXimEZToyUJg5Th
