Magda Mayas - prepared piano. Raed Yassin - live electronics. After a break of several years, one of the most singular pianists in Europe today, Magda Mayas, returns to the Improdimensija stage. This time she presents her sound experiments together with Raed Yassin, an artist from Beirut performing on live electronics. Raed Yassin and Magda Mayas have known each other for more than twenty years - their first encounters took place at the “Irtijal” festival in Beirut. Both musicians also play in the trio “Thuluth” with vocalist Ute Wassermann. In the duo, Yassin works with electronics and Mayas with prepared piano. Their musical dialogue is shaped by decades of experience in different, overlapping scenes and contexts of experimental and improvised music. Magda Mayas is a Berlin-based pianist, composer and researcher who explores the inner and outer possibilities of the piano through amplification and a variety of preparations and objects that expand the instrument's capabilities. She is one of the most important figures in the European free improvisation and experimental music scene. Mayas is a co-founder of the artists' collective “smallest functional unit”, which publishes experimental scores through “Graphème”, and of the Berlin-based curatorial collective “Khomasi”, which runs “Making Waves”, a series of talks and screenings on art and politics. She holds a doctorate in musical performance and interpretation from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and is a professor and researcher at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Over the course of her career, M. Mayas has performed and toured in Europe, the USA, Australia, Mexico and the Middle East. She has collaborated with many of the most prominent figures in improvisation and composition, such as John Butcher, George Lewis, Andy Moor, Nate Wooley, Peter Evans, Phil Niblock, Fred Frith, Hamid Drake, Paul Lovens, Ken Vandermark, Okkyung Lee and others. Looking at M. Mayas's biography, it seems her body of work would be enough for at least several more musicians. Concerts in every corner of the world with the most relevant and influential performers of avant-garde jazz and improvised music, studies at prestigious institutions and a great many awards. Yet what matters most is not with whom, when and where she has played, but the music she creates. And M. Mayas creates music that is magically absorbing and breathtaking. Raed Yassin (b. 1979, Beirut) is a Lebanese musician and interdisciplinary artist living and working in Berlin and Beirut. He is one of the key figures of the Lebanese experimental music scene, founder of the groups “A Trio” and “PRAED” and one of the organisers of the Beirut experimental music festival “Irtijal”. In 2009 Yassin founded the independent label “Annihaya”. As a musician he explores the possibilities of sound through extended performance techniques, electronics, found objects and archival recordings. IMPRO JAM SESSION. At this concert, an improvised jam session will take place on the “Improdimensija” stage for the first time! This marks the beginning of a new “Improdimensija” tradition. From now on, improvised jam sessions will be held once a month, on the first Tuesday of the month. This jam session is intended for musicians interested in experimenting, in searching for unexpected musical solutions and in stepping beyond the boundaries of the usual, mainstream sound.
