MARCHES AND MANIPULATIONS: Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra | VILNIUS WINDS
At the festival, as every year, the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra presents a programme devoted to avant-garde contemporary music, prepared by the acclaimed interpreter of contemporary music, the orchestra's principal conductor Karolis Variakojis. The concert will feature the music of the classic of instrumental theatre, Mauricio Kagel. In the festival programme devoted to contemporary music, the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra invites you to a provocative performance dedicated to the work of one of the most prominent music experimenters of the 20th century, the German composer of Argentine origin Mauricio Kagel. The composer's name is inseparable from instrumental theatre, in which satire, theatricality and political subtext are masterfully interwoven. The creator sought to make music not only heard but also watched, and so in his works the performers often become a kind of actors. The composition performed at the concert, “Ten Marches to Miss the Victory”, and the radio play “Der Tribun” deconstruct the genre of the march (traditionally associated with military power and discipline) and turn it into a tool of manipulation, drawing the listener into an ironic dialogue about power and society. Karolis Variakojis completed his conducting studies in 2015 at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, in the class of Prof. Juozas Domarkas. From 2015 to 2020 he led the Alytus youth symphony orchestra “Svajonė”, and since 2020 he has been the principal conductor of the Lithuanian Symphonic Wind Orchestra. He is one of the most active interpreters of contemporary music, founder of the ensemble “Synaesthesis” (together with the composer Dominykas Digimas), and a guest conductor of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and others.
