Media Opera ČIURLIONIS: I SEE MUSIC
The media opera “Čiurlionis: I See Music” is a contemporary wordless tale based on the work of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, in which music, image and light merge into a single dramaturgical journey. The authors of the performance are Audronė Žigaitytė and Mantas Bartusevičius. Its visual dramaturgy draws on more than 200 of M. K. Čiurlionis’s paintings, which form a shifting spatial structure and become an active part of the artistic narrative. The musical fabric of the performance is made up of Čiurlionis’s works across various genres. The structure of the performance is built on a continuous movement through the elements and states of being – from the primordial spring and the depths of the forest to cosmic visions and the horizon of the sea. The symbol of the narrative is the mythological grass snake, understood here not as a character but as a principle of movement, transformation and life – a line, a curve, a pulse of light that leads the viewer through Čiurlionis’s worldview. The musical fabric of the performance is made up of Čiurlionis’s works across various genres. His harmonised Lithuanian folk song “Sutems tamsi naktužėlė” is performed by the Vilnius sacred music choir ADORAMUS. The chamber line is continued by the first movement of the Quartet, arranged for orchestra by Vilhelmas Čepinskis and performed by the Šiauliai Chamber Orchestra SOLIARIS, conducted by the author of the arrangement. The symphonic scale is created by fragments of the symphonic poems “In the Forest” and “The Sea” and the cantata “De Profundis”, performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the Kaunas State Choir (artistic director Petras Bingelis), conducted by Juozas Domarkas. “Čiurlionis: I See Music” invites the viewer not to watch but to experience – to listen to the movement, light and sound through which Čiurlionis’s living, ever-changing world unfolds.
