Music Performance "Sayonakidori" (Nightingale)

uka-uka: the sound of being slightly wrong all the time uwaa: the sound of a feeling that cannot be put into words boro-boro: the sound of everything around you falling apart* *onomatopoeia from Polly Barton's book "Fifty Sounds" Sayonakidori (Japanese for nightingale) is a landscape of onomatopoeia revealing how Japanese onomatopoeia (sonic equivalents of things or phenomena) make it possible to convey sounds through words. Composer and director Agnė Matulevičiūtė visited Nijō Castle during her trips to Japan in order to explore the architecture of this unique building and its floors, which produce sounds resembling birdsong. The "nightingale floors" are spoken of as a myth: they may have been a security system to guard against intruders, or simply an unintentional architectural flaw. The artist is fascinated by the fact that this myth is nevertheless written down and retold by someone. Such duality opens up particularly broad and intriguing contexts and themes for creating a performance. A walk along the "nightingale floors" inspired the artist to create a piece for the building, playing it like a musical instrument, toying with what is unseen yet heard, and vice versa. It is a work joining music and dance, in which the performers themselves shape the sonic fabric using their bodies and voices. The themes of the music performance arise from observing Japanese culture from a distance and interpreting it through European eyes: security, fear of the other, fragments of a culture of ghosts, explorations of the phenomenon of unease. The sound technology of the nightingale corridor, used for protection, inspires themes of attack, defence and privacy. Here security is both an inner state and a fear of the world's insecurity.
