Musical Performance for Children “Owl Drūlija 2”
Owl Drūlija 2 | Drūlija and the Sleepy Yawns | A musical performance for children The adventures of Owl Drūlija continue! "Owl Drūlija and the Sleepy Yawns" is the second series of the "Lietuva" ensemble's musical performance "Owl Drūlija," inviting you to playfully dive into the kingdom of dreams and sleep. This new programme for the whole family is based on Inga Narijauskienė's tale "Owl Drūlija and the Sleepy Yawns." In the second series, you'll hear about the day Owl Drūlija decided that sleep gets in the way of playing and is no longer needed – after all, think how much you can get done if you never sleep! So Drūlija decides to give up sleeping altogether and heads into the forest to pick mushrooms. There she meets her friends, characters children already know – Umba the squirrel, Taputapas the elephant, Magagas the duckling, and the woodpeckers – who tell her about their own sleep rituals, and about what to do when you can't fall asleep because you're too excited for your birthday, or when you don't want to go to sleep because you had a strange dream and don't want to dream it again. In the end, Drūlija falls asleep, and upon waking realises that it is sleep itself that lets us play and do so many fun and joyful things – so she thanks her body for helping her understand when she's tired. "Owl Drūlija and the Sleepy Yawns" is a story that nurtures a healthy relationship with one's own body and helps children better understand the importance of rest, while also offering ways for children to calm down and fall asleep more easily – because sleep is truly a pleasure. In this performance, the owl's goal is to help little ones develop the skill of falling asleep on their own, to present sleep as a wonderful friend, to invite children to create their own sleep rituals, and to explain what to do after having an unpleasant dream. This "Lietuva" performance introduces two brand-new characters – Magagas the duckling and Pompocė the frog. The adventures in the forest will sound distinctly Lithuanian: you'll hear traditional Lithuanian instruments such as the birbynė, kanklės, lumzdelis and skrabalai. The story itself is also woven through with Lithuanian folk games and the tender, magical relationship with nature that is so familiar to all Lithuanians. By nurturing Lithuanian folk art on stage, we aim to shape the identity of the younger generation in a way that is both relevant and inspiring – something our grandparents grew up with, our parents grew up with, we grew up with, and our children will grow up with too. "The 'Lietuva' ensemble has long pursued this mission – introducing children to national art. Not only through performances for children, but also through educational programmes that a large share of Lithuanian schools attend. The appearance of this particular Owl is special to me, as I knew the writer Inga Narijauskienė well – my daughter and I attended the classes for toddlers that she led. While raising her son Pijus, Inga began telling stories about Owl Drūlija, so the character's stories have been growing for more than twenty years now. The performance, too, has been shaped a great deal at home – by me while raising my daughter, by Inga while raising her son, and by Pijus himself while raising his own son," says director Giedrė Kriaučionytė-Vosylienė, who works with the "Lietuva" ensemble. The very first, premiere performance of "Owl Drūlija" was successfully staged in December 2024 and is now returning to the repertoire. The second series of the performance, "Owl Drūlija and the Sleepy Yawns," was shown in December 2025 and continues its tour in 2026. This December brings the third instalment – "Owl Drūlija and the Day of NO." As is tradition, school classes and groups are invited each year to attend performances at the "Lietuva" ensemble's own premises during the Christmas period. Owl Drūlija is a character created by I. Narijauskienė, author of therapeutic stories, who only much later – after becoming an early childhood education specialist and a grandmother – had the stories she used to tell at home written down and given a life of their own. Drūlija's tales are fun, engaging stories that nurture values and help children grow. They're easy to understand, so little ones quickly identify with the characters, discover important life lessons, develop their imagination, and strengthen their emotional and social intelligence. The witty, multi-layered story allows both children and their parents to find a way through some of the less simple stages of child development.
