Natalka Vorozhbyt “GREEN CORRIDORS” dir. Maksym Holenko (performance in Ukrainian)
Natalka Vorozhbyt “Green Corridors” Premiere – 11–12 December 2026 Performance in Ukrainian with Lithuanian surtitles Green corridors – that was the official term used, once the war against Ukraine began, for the routes along which civilians fled war zones. This is a modern-day parable, the story of four women from Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Bucha, and Kyiv travelling towards the border of the European Union. Homelessness, the fate of the refugee, illusions. On the other side of the border, a woman named Europe awaits the refugees. She wants to do good, but… “While waiting for a new life,” conflicts arise between the characters – conflicts deeply rooted in the history of Ukraine and Europe itself. Who betrayed whom? Who profited from whom? Who collaborated with whom? Natalka Vorozhbyt presents all of this as only she can – self-critically, with humour and irony, through the eyes of ordinary people caught in impossible situations. In her work, despair is often tinged with dark humour, which helps one to survive. N. Vorozhbyt wrote the play specifically for the Munich Kammerspiele – it was a joint project with the Kyiv Theatre on the Podil. In spring 2023 it was also staged at that same Podil Theatre. “To live at the centre of Europe in wartime and not notice the war happening nearby? From a theatre’s perspective, that is wrong. Theatre must respond. ‘Green Corridors’ is one of the most popular and celebrated productions at the Kammerspiele, winning numerous awards, appearing at many festivals, and always drawing full houses. A nation is at war; there is something Europeans were not prepared for. It is a very interesting experience. We want to talk about it.” (Maksym Holenko) Natalka Vorozhbyt is a Ukrainian playwright, screenwriter, film director, and curator – one of the most successful authors of her generation. She is the author of around twenty plays. In March 2022, she was awarded Ukraine’s National Taras Shevchenko Prize. Maksym Holenko is one of Ukraine’s most prominent theatre directors. Since 2023 he has served as artistic director of the National Zankovetska Academic Drama Theatre in Lviv.
