Night walk at Lukiškės Prison in Lithuanian
Never before has escaping into a prison been so easy. The historic Lukiškės Prison complex, ringed by a high wall, invites you in for a walk. Lukiškės Prison is not the answer to every question. But who wouldn't want to visit it? Those curious about the everyday life of the inmates during the prison's final years of operation are invited on a unique daytime walk; lovers of stronger sensations are recommended the night-time experience; and for those who want to look deeper still, there is a historical walk introducing more than a century of Lukiškės Prison history, its different periods and its architecture. Three different walk formats - three ways to get to know one of the most extraordinary places in Vilnius. An experience with no equivalent anywhere in the region. We can't shake the feeling that such a walk, a march in the footsteps of the convicts, is the best kept secret in the whole city. A reminder that the writer Žemaitė was imprisoned here, as were the signatories of Lithuania's Act of Independence Jonas Vileišis, Mykolas Biržiška and Vladas Mironas, the partisan commander Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, the Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin and many other historical figures. Henrikas Daktaras was imprisoned here too, but you already know that. Day and night walks We have all heard stories about life in prisons, about the criminal world or about Lukiškės. But does anyone know it better than those who know Lukiškės Prison inside out and worked here for quite some time? Our prison officers spent a great deal of time in Lukiškės and saw everything with their own eyes. Add the long experience and connections of professional guides, and they become just about the perfect people to talk to. Don't be shy about asking - save your deepest questions for the walk. Death row cells, visiting rooms, human "containers", the operatives, historical figures, items forbidden to bring in, horses, love affairs, secret works of art, prisoners' weddings, escapes from the prison and spaces of Lukiškės Prison never seen anywhere before. After sunset the prison really does feel haunted, and it becomes only more interesting. This is more than an escape room, a guided tour or a night at the museum. An interactive walk in the dark - you, the walls of Lukiškės Prison and a torch. We promise this is a walk you will never forget. Take the walk by day and by night! Get your tickets in advance. It is truly worth it. The buildings of Lukiškės Prison The present Lukiškės Prison complex - which was, by the way, very modern and expensive as a penal institution - was designed by the architect G. Trambickis and his team. Construction of the prison was completed in 1904. The Lukiškės Prison complex consists of the administrative building, the Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker, the dormitory building, the prison building, the prison hospital building, the wall and the control checkpoint. The complex is included in the Register of Cultural Property and holds the status of a national cultural treasure. Lukiškės Prison 2.0 Lukiškės Prison has awakened the interest of city dwellers and artists. The new version of Lukiškės Prison creates a different image, emotion and story. Lukiškės Prison 2.0 is not merely a new or better version of a prison. It is far more than that. Conversion is one of the most interesting cultural phenomena in Lithuania. From now on we look only towards a better version of the prison instead of glancing back. Lukiškės Prison is full of culture, music and bright people. The conversion format we proposed already brings together 650 creators and residents. The community of residents at Lukiškės creates good and shares it with the city. A historic heritage site in the centre of Vilnius has become a generator of music, contemporary art, design and culture. Lukiškės Prison has become a wonderful place that works for the benefit of its communities and supports its artists. There is a great deal of culture here, which is why artists and creatives want to work here. This vision and concept have attracted the attention of Europe and the world. All that remains is to change our perspective and enjoy this conversion.
