From Queen Morta to Žemaitė: How Women Shaped the History of Vilnius and Lithuania

On the festive day of July 6th, I invite you to discover an untold (or lesser-known!) side of Vilnius and Lithuanian history—through the lens of women and their vital contributions. Although women have always made up half of the population, their activities, achievements, and influence were overlooked for a long time. Even today, women are underrepresented in the history of Lithuania and Vilnius. This tour aims to help recognize and appreciate the impact of women both in history and today. Here is just a sneak peek of what you will discover during the tour: • What was the name of the first woman ever mentioned in Lithuanian history? • What do the latest DNA studies reveal about the cause of Barbara Radziwill's death, and which Vilnius building holds a hidden code related to the discovery of her remains? • Why were there no women in the Council of Lithuania in 1918? • Where in Vilnius was the first vegetarian restaurant located, and who owned it? • How is the Lithuanian National Philharmonic connected to women's rights? • Which famous woman, while imprisoned in Lukiškės Prison, boldly demanded to go to the bathhouse? The tour starts at the Monument to King Mindaugas and ends at Lukiškės Prison (Lukiškių kalėjimas). The tour will be led by Agnė Zakaravičiūtė, a licensed guide with Master's degrees in International Relations and Diplomacy, and Linguistics. By participating in the tour, you agree to potentially being photographed. If you prefer not to be photographed, please inform the guide in advance. The organizer reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the tour due to unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, tickets will be refunded or transferred to another tour.
