Remote Seminar: "Jim Trelease's 'The Read-Aloud Handbook': Why It's Worth Reading Aloud to Children?"
The Children and Youth Literature Centre of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and the Povilas Višinskis Public Library of Šiauliai County are collaborating on reading promotion activities. This seminar is one such event. On May 27 at 11 AM, we invite reading promotion specialists, librarians, educators, and everyone interested in children's literature to an online seminar on the benefits of reading aloud. The Children and Youth Literature Centre initiated and this year published Jim Trelease's book "The Read-Aloud Handbook". J. Trelease is an American educator and writer who particularly highlighted the importance of reading aloud. This book is not about how to teach a child to read; it's about how to encourage them to want to read. The book uses arguments and scientific research to explain why we should read aloud to children and when to start doing so. During the seminar, Prof. Dr. Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė, Chief Researcher at the Children and Youth Literature Centre, will present this book, discuss the read-aloud strategies proposed therein and their benefits, and review a list of recommended books for reading aloud to children, specifically adapted for the Lithuanian audience. We invite you to register HERE. The seminar will take place remotely on the "Microsoft Teams" platform. The seminar duration is 1 hour. The publication of the book is part of the "Knygų startas" (Book Start) early reading promotion project, which is a measure of the Reading Promotion Action Plan for 2025–2027. The project is implemented by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
