Bertolt Brecht’s play is a short, grotesque story in which absolutely everything is overloaded, damaged and broken: the furniture, the people and their relationships. It all comes to a head during the wedding feast.
“Bertolt Brecht’s „Miesčioniškos vestuvės“ (the play’s actual title) speaks about society’s moral hypocrisy. Essentially, everything revolves around the discovery that the bride has lost her virginity before the wedding. The performance takes a broader view. It is about more than double standards and chastity: it also addresses the disintegration of customs and the absurd distortion of what were once the most sacred things in human existence — weddings, funerals, a sense of the cosmic cycle and traditions of celebration.
Of course, a distinctly Lithuanian aspect is also revealed: the disorientation of a rural person coming to live in the city, even an inability to become what is called a townsman, and, naturally, a complete lack of understanding of the processes of globalisation that influence them in one way or another. Above all, of course, this is a good comedy, turned towards us or our loved ones like a mirror. We can certainly laugh here — if not at ourselves, then at least at our neighbour, and that tradition among us is immortal. Any laughter is good when it does not come from anger.
The performance is very open and includes a great deal of improvisation. The latest social and political issues are continually brought into it, so it keeps changing. The performance is open to the audience. It therefore never repeats itself and is different every time. So if you enjoy this Dionysian revel with Lithuanian white salad, you can confidently come again and again.” Director Oskaras Koršunovas
