OMD Summer of Hits

On August 26, one of the pioneers and most prominent representatives of synth-pop – the British band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) – will perform a concert in Vilnius, at Lukiškės Prison 2.0. Well-known hits such as "Electricity", "Messages", "Enola Gay", "Locomotion", "Souvenir", "Sailing On The Seven Seas", "So in Love" and others not only made OMD one of the most significant bands of the 1980s, but also became a source of inspiration for many pop music stars to this day – from Depeche Mode and Duran Duran to Moby, Radiohead, Arcade Fire and others. The birth of OMD is considered to be October 12, 1978, when lead vocalist and bassist Andy McCluskey and keyboardist and vocalist Paul Humphreys first performed at Liverpool's Eric's club. The young men, who had previously played in other projects, were united by a passion for krautrock, Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, and David Bowie. A simple Korg M-500 Micro Preset synthesizer, bought on installment by McCluskey's mother, played an important role in shaping OMD's musical style – it defined their minimalist rhythm, complemented by melancholic vocals and memorable, hook-filled melodies. OMD's first single "Electricity", which McCluskey described as "a faster, punkier version of Kraftwerk's 'Radioactivity' with a chorus", helped the duo sign their first record deal and release their debut album, which featured another hit, "Messages". OMD gained wider recognition in Europe and attention in the US with "Enola Gay" – a controversial track from their second album "Organisation", where a driving dancefloor beat and passionate melody contrast with sensitive lyrics about the US plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After releasing the album "Organisation", OMD became a four-piece band, with drummer Malcolm Holmes and saxophonist/keyboardist Martin Cooper joining the duo. This is considered the band's "golden" line-up. OMD's third album, "Architecture & Morality", featuring classic tracks like "Maid of Orleans", "Joan of Arc", and "Souvenir", highlighted the band's creative and professional growth. This was followed by the experimental but commercially unsuccessful album "Dazzle Ships", after which the band decided to pivot towards a simpler, more pop-oriented style – a move that paid off. Alongside the albums "Junk Culture" (1984) and "Crush" (1985), listeners were treated to hits like "Locomotion", "Tesla Girls", "Talking Loud and Clear", "So In Love", "Secret", and the highly successful US hit "If You Leave", which was featured in the movie "Pretty In Pink". In 1989, when the other members of the band decided to form their own group, The Listening Pool, Andy McCluskey remained the sole member of OMD. McCluskey's first solo OMD album, "Sugar Tax" (1991), featuring hits like "Sailing On The Seven Seas" and "Pandora's Box", was quite successful, and listeners also highly appreciated "Walking on the Milky Way" from the album "Universal" (1996). Between 1996 and 2006, the OMD project was put on hold, and its founders pursued other activities: McCluskey collaborated with former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos and created the girl pop group Atomic Kitten, while Humphreys formed the project Onetwo with Claudia Brücken, the former vocalist of the German synth-pop band Propaganda. In 2006, OMD reunited in their "golden" line-up: Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Martin Cooper, and Malcolm Holmes (due to health issues, he was replaced in the band by Stuart Kershaw in 2015). Since then, they have released 4 studio albums, the latest of which, "Bauhaus Staircase", came out in 2023. This clearly demonstrated that OMD remains one of the few bands of their generation still capable of creating inspiring music that is acclaimed by critics and fans alike. Over nearly five decades (with a break), the band has sold more than 40 million records worldwide, cementing their reputation as electronic synthesizer pioneers and one of Britain's most beloved pop groups.
