Online Seminar: Jim Trelease's 'The Read-Aloud Handbook': Why Read Aloud to Children?
The Centre for Children and Youth Literature of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and the Šiauliai County Povilas Višinskis Public Library are collaborating on reading promotion activities. This seminar is one such event. On May 27 at 11 AM, we invite reading promotion specialists, librarians, educators, and everyone interested in children's literature to an online seminar on the benefits of reading aloud. The Centre for Children and Youth Literature initiated and this year published Jim Trelease's book "The Read-Aloud Handbook". J. Trelease is an American educator and author who particularly emphasized the importance of reading aloud. This book is not about how to teach a child to read; it's about how to encourage them to want to read. The book uses arguments and scientific research to explain why we should read aloud to children and when to start doing so. During the seminar, Prof. Dr. Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė, chief researcher at the Centre for Children and Youth Literature, will present this book, discuss the read-aloud strategies and their benefits proposed in it, and review a list of recommended books for reading aloud to children, specially adapted for the Lithuanian audience. We invite you to register HERE. The seminar will take place online on the "Microsoft Teams" platform. The seminar duration is 1 hour. The book's publication is part of the early reading promotion project "Knygų startas", a measure of the Reading Promotion Action Plan 2025–2027. The project is implemented by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
