Opening of the exhibition „Tanchum Kaplan. From Words to Images“

On 4 September at 17:00 the opening of the exhibition „Tanchum Kaplan. From Words to Images“ will take place at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania (atrium, 3rd floor). With this event we mark the European Days of Jewish Culture. The exhibition presents the work of the Litvak-born artist Tanchum ben Levi Kaplan (1902–1980), also known as Anatoli Kaplan. A special place in Kaplan's work is held by the world of the shtetls – the small Jewish towns, a large part of which was destroyed during the Holocaust. In colourful, expressive lithographs the characters of the Yiddish literary classic Sholem Aleichem come to life, along with folk song motifs, scenes of everyday life and traditions. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to become acquainted with an artist who was almost the only one in the Soviet Union permitted to consistently cultivate Jewish themes and to preserve the Jewish artistic tradition. His works earned international recognition in London, New York and other art centres around the world, and today allow us to look anew at the heritage of Litvak culture and its significance for European history. The Tanchum Kaplan exhibition at the National Library of Lithuania presents works from the cycles „The Bewitched Tailor“, „Stempenyu“, „Jewish Folk Songs“ and „A Little Goat“ from the collection of the collector Tanya Rubinstein-Horowitz (Germany–Israel). The exhibition is curated by Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth (Germany); consultant and text editor Dr. Lara Lempertienė (Centre for Judaic Studies). Sincere thanks for help in preparing the exhibition go to Daumantas Levas Todesas, chairman of the Lithuanian Jewish Cultural Heritage Route Association. At the exhibition opening, pianist Adam Chen-Adamov and cellist Alma Bar-Sinai (Israel) will perform. Exhibition team: Algirdas Jakas, Akvilė Paukštytė, Daura Polonskytė, Viltė Barbora Viliūnaitė, Jolanta Kanapickaitė, Žilvinas Baranauskas. Texts translated from Yiddish by Aistė Puidokaitė and Rasa Stakauskaitė. The exhibition can be visited in the Atrium on the 5th floor of the National Library until 4 November 2026.
