Lithuanians call her Pelenė, the English call her Cinderella, the French call her Cendrillon, the Germans call her Aschenputtel, the Ukrainians call her Popeluška, the Belarusians call her Papeluška, the Poles call her Kopciuszek, the Latvians call her Pelnrušķīte, the Russians call her Zoluška — and so on. Every mother can tell her own version of this tale, for in fact the world's folklore contains thousands of variants of the Cinderella story. In this production, everyone will find their favourite version of Cinderella, though it all begins in the traditional way. You will meet a kind-hearted widower and his daughter — a sweet and pleasant girl. Alas, the widower marries an arrogant and wicked lady with two daughters who are very much like their mother. The stepmother forces her stepdaughter to live in the attic, sleep on a straw bed, and do the heaviest and dirtiest chores. She usually sits on a cinder box by the fireplace, so her stepsisters have nicknamed her Cinderella. But one day, true miracles began to happen, leading Cinderella to a fateful feast in the royal palace... Charles Perrault (1628–1703) — French writer, storyteller, poet, and critic. He wrote allegorical poems, odes, and verses, as well as tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, Donkey Skin, Cinderella, Bluebeard, and others. His fairy tales have inspired operas and ballets, most notably Rossini's opera Cinderella, Bartok's opera Bluebeard's Castle, and Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty.
