Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce "THE ONE WHO SAW IN THE DARK" (Dir. Rolandas Atkočiūnas)
Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce "The One Who Saw in the Dark" Premiere – October 10, 11, 2026 Performance in Lithuanian This is a play based on the book "The Boy Who Saw in the Dark" ( Latv. "Puika, kurš redzēja tumsā") by Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce, a Latvian writer and playwright of Lithuanian origin. This is the story of Jokūbas – a boy, a young man, and later a mature man, whose parents are visually impaired. It's a story about a person who tries to understand the world so that others can live in it. Jokūbas's mother (Zelma) and father (Lionginas) are blind. More visually impaired people live in the dormitory. From an early age, the boy became their eyes. Blindness is not a disease, much less a tragedy; it is an existential state. Jokūbas is burdened early with worries and responsibilities. He is different everywhere: both in the society of the sighted and among the visually impaired. However, he knows how to love, he grows and matures, accompanied by contradictions, but also by the joys of everyday life. The play does not ask what it means to be blind. It asks – what does it mean to see? Is it a gift or a burden? How can a person grow when they have to be an adult from the very beginning? What marks does a close relationship leave, one that is both love and dependence? R. Bugavičute-Pēce bases her work on the observation of social reality and documentary sensitivity. The most important element in her plays is the human voice – authentic, living language that captures what people tend to keep silent about, or at best, say half-heartedly. The story and characters of the play "The One Who Saw in the Dark" have real-life counterparts. The production is close to documentary theatre, or at least approaches it. "Darkness in this play is not negative. Jokūbas saw in the dark – he saw what others could not. Love and burden can coexist in one person. To understand this – that's what theatre is for, it can do that." (Rolandas Atkočiūnas) "This story is not about seeing or not seeing, but about what is perceived not with the eyes. About what is most important." (Bārbala Simsonė) /// Ras
