Autumn at Bernardine Cemetery 10.24 | Old Cemetery of Vilnius (MIM)

At the entrance to Bernardine Cemetery, everyone who arrives and steps through the gate is greeted by a memorial plaque bearing the inscription “Non omnis moriar” – “I shall not wholly die.” And perhaps this sounds somewhat paradoxical, but this second-oldest cemetery in Vilnius is truly lively: people live there (they really do!), a dog and a cat (who has its own Facebook page); every spring, the paths between the graves bloom into a blue sea of flowers; a river ripples at the foot of the cemetery, gardens scent the air, and intensive construction work is often under way nearby.

Although, when the cemetery was first established, it lay far beyond the city, and today there is no trace of that peaceful countryside here, I think the people laid to rest here would not object in the least: buried at Bernardine Cemetery are active, creative and courageous residents of Vilnius, whose life stories you will hear. You will also see impressive tombstones, a chapel and a columbarium, learn what the insurgents hid at Bernardine Cemetery and why one of the oldest cemeteries in Vilnius is only two hundred years old.🟠 Meeting point: by the entrance to Bernardine Cemetery, Žvirgždyno 3.🕜 Duration: about 2 hours.
