Screening of Documentary Films "Ripples of Physis" and "Ukoapkas"
3 PM. Documentary Film "Ripples of Physis" The film "Ripples of Physis" introduces karakami, a decorative paper with a rich tradition and cultural significance, hand-printed for over 400 years at the "Karacho" company. The intricate patterns of the paper convey a sense of nature and eternal beauty. The film showcases the extremely meticulous karakami production process, aiming to capture the essence of nature. These patterns are not merely decorative – they are closely linked to Japan's cultural heritage, historical sites, and traditions. The film features Italian rock carvings, Roman mosaics, indigenous Ainu patterns, and contemporary works, presenting an interesting visual dialogue between past and present. This journey through patterns will remind viewers of perhaps forgotten important sensations and a connection to the archaic layer of all humanity. Documentary Film "Ukoapkas" The documentary film "Ukoapkas" (2025) documents an intercultural collaboration project that took place in June 2024 in Nibutani, Hokkaido. In linocut cultural exchange workshops, Australian Aboriginal and Japanese Ainu artists met to explore and create new art forms together, combining their traditional styles. Directed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meng Qu and produced by Prof. Kanako Uzawa, "Ukoapkas" sensitively and insightfully documents these creative exchanges, revealing both cultures' deep respect for natural materials, presenting this unifying philosophy as a dialogue about a sustainable cultural future. "Ukoapkas" is more than a documentary film – it is a testament to the power of art to connect cultures and create new avenues for indigenous peoples' self-expression in a globalized world.
