From 13:30. “Ainu: Indigenous People of Japan” (2019) In the film “Ainu: Indigenous People of Japan” (2019), director Naomi Mizoguchi attempts to reveal the various efforts of modern-day Ainu to reclaim and pass on their cultural identity. It tells of the daily life of four elderly members of the Ainu community living in the town of Biratori on the island of Hokkaido. Born in the 1930s, they were not taught the Ainu language within their families because of society's attitude at the time towards Ainu identity. After decades of changing attitudes, they became interested in their heritage and turned into active local leaders, helping to revive their language and culture. The film focuses on their experience and their efforts to preserve history and culture through Ainu language classes and participation in various everyday activities. It tells how Ainu culture and traditions live on and flourish thanks to people's efforts, and this gives hope that Ainu culture will be passed on to future generations.
